Downing Street - Lebuh Downing, Georgetown Penang

Georgetown Penang has been awarded as UNESCO World Heritage Site (WHS) since 7th July 2008 and Penang has retained most of the colonial street name including Downing Street. This street has one of the notable name and located at the business district area of Georgetown with buildings such as General Post Office, HSBC Bank and adjacent to the Standard Charted Bank located at Beach Street.

The Penang General Post Office is located at the Bangunan Tuanku Syed Putra at Downing Street. Bangunan Tuanku Syed Putra is one of the first government building which is named after Tuanku Syed Putra, the King of Perlis. The post office which officially name as Pos Malaysia Berhad provides domestic and international postal and courier services including pos laju, pos express, bill payment, general mail or registered mail. The post office counter serves customers who come personally for bill payment, purchase of stamps, envelopes and to perform counter services as well as posting and delivery of mails. Customers will have to follow the queuing system where everyone have to take a queue ticket in order to perform a transaction at the counter. The 'bil-bil sahaja' queue indicates that you can only pay bills whereby 'pelbagai' queue means various options including purchase of pos express, pos laju, stamps etc. Once the queuing number has reached your turn, your number will be displayed on the board to indicate which counter you should quickly move forward to perform your transactions.

HSBC Bank - Downing Street branch which is six storeys building is just located beside the General Post Office at the intersection of Beach Street. HSBC bank as one of the world's largest bank established its first office in the island of Penang to provide major banking and financial services.

While visiting Downing Street in Georgetown, one will not forget to drop by the famous 'Ban Chang Kuih' stall in front of the General Post Office. This Penang famous Ban Chang Kuih is a type of sweet pan cake which is made of flour, grounded roasted peanuts, sugars , paste of magerine and sweet corn. This pan cake is also known as Chinese Pan Cake or Chinese waffle where it is folded into half before serving to customers. This popular hawker stall is usually crowded with customers waiting for their turn to buy the delicious, mouth-watering pan cake in the afternoon and each slices is sold at RM0.70. This is with additional filling of sweet corn, cheap right?  There are mainly two types of Ban Chang Kuih as you can refer to the pictures below. One is thin, crispy and crunchie and another version is thick and spongy. The thin and thicker version are both sold at RM0.70 per piece and if you want the semicircle big piece of thicker version (consist of 4 separate piece) it will cost RM2.80 (RM0.70 x 4).

I hope you enjoy the pictures in this blog. I personally bought 8 Ban Chang Kuih on that day and I strongly recommend any of you to have a taste of this delicious Chinese Pan Cake whenever you pass by Downing Street, Georgetown Penang.
